The photographer: Jill Greenberg
I believe that this photograph meets the 6 criteria for a good photograph. The image is pleasing and brings the viewer thoughts of happiness and enjoyment. The viewer is familiar with the individual in the photograph as she is both dressed and looks like lots of young women you could see on any street. The photograph has a small sense of mystery as you may wonder where it was taken and what type of music was being enjoyed. The image could be used for many different things including advertising on a wide range of subjects including head phones, toothpaste and feminine hygiene products. The medium is correct as the image is a good photograph but nothing more.

Visual Literacy - Death
Photo Analysis
Feelings/mood - Thinking of death. I thought it would be nice to shoot the cannon for the white balance project as it was located in a cemetery and I would have lots of time and no one asking what I was doing. The more I thought about things and the more I looked at the scene, death became the subject of the day.
Subject placement - the cannon with the lone flag, the masses of grave markers and the babyland marker.
Multilayered - When looking at the cannon, you see a large instrument of death proudly displayed amongst the dead. One small flag is shown as a patriotic symbol. I'd like to think that viewers would see that the dead in these graves supported the flag and the country it represents, and not the weapon. With the multiple graves photos, I hoped to show that even in death, the social classes are present with the varying sizes of the markers. And finally, the babyland marker is to convey how precious life is and how it can be jerked away at any time.
Depth of field - N/A
Light - Natural light was used in all of the photos except the vase photos. The vase shots used overhead lights and two table lamps all of which were insufficent.
Improvement - I started out with the thought of learning about white balance and not a central theme. With a central theme, I would have done more reasearch and gotten more of a variety of shots from inside the funeral home as well as the grave yard. Perhaps even some churches as well. For these shots, I would have picked a better day as the light was constantly changing due to weather. Running back and forth into the car when the showers came by and then getting set up again each time detracted greatly from my experience. I would have used a flash on the vase shots as I did not have enough light for the subject.
